How Do Plants Use Magnesium?


Magnesium serves as one of the most crucial elements that secure a faster growth period for the plant. Similar to the human body, plants also require chemical processes to survive. This process is commonly known as chlorophyll. Since magnesium forms a significant part of a plant’s chlorophyll for photosynthesis, it becomes vital for the survival of the plant. The phosphate content in magnesium makes it a phosphorus carrier for phosphate metabolism. Alongside this, it allows certain enzymes to take action for plant respiration and cell division. 

Perhaps it is not wrong to say that a plant cannot store and convert solar energy for vital survival needs without the presence of this compound. It is the powerhouse of the photosynthesis process itself since it is located inside the chlorophyll molecule. 

Signs and Symptoms of Absent Magnesium in Plants

Plants showing slow growth with yellowing leaves on the outer areas are generally a crucial sign. It is a sign seen in the newly growing leaves, especially those that can show dark and yellow spots. Similarly, purple or reddish spots are another sign that the plant is decaying. That is a sign for the cultivator to introduce natural or artificial magnesium compounds in fertilizers for better plant growth. 

When we look at this deficiency in further detail, we notice an absence of chlorosis in plants suffering from a lack of this nutrient. Chlorosis refers to the leaf structure becoming yellow over time, where its veins remain green. It gives the leaf a texture similar to a marble floor. When we speak of the appearance of a red-brown-purple tint, it is the leaf margins that show this pigment. 

What happens is that magnesium is mobile in plants. Hence, when such a deficiency begins to show, it causes the chlorophyll in older leaves to get broken down so that it goes to the newly sprouting plant leaves. Therefore, if chlorosis is not prevented, it starts affecting the newer regions of the plant as well and becomes a problem.

The older leaves then fall off. Magnesium deficiency will also affect enzyme growth, leading to a drop in plant health. The plant faces premature aging this way. 

Other areas affected that constitute a longer life span and growth of the plant include nutrient uptake control, plant oil and fat formation, sugar synthesis, and starch formation and regulation. 

A lack of such an inhibitor will affect plant growth drastically.

Examples of Natural Fertilizers with Magnesium

Epsom salt is a well-known example, also commonly referred to as magnesium sulfate. It helps create a healthy environment by transporting magnesium, oxygen, and sulfur to the required areas. 

Since it is a tried and tested method that has existed for decades, Epsom salts have proven to help plants develop bushier foliage and grow more flowers with an increased vibrancy in color.

Moreover, it also helps seeds grow faster and keep away from slugs and aids in pest control for all respective plant varieties. However, just like too much of anything can adversely affect human life and health, an Epsom salt overdose can also have harmful effects on plant growth and soil conditions. 

Organic compost is another example of a natural fertilizer, even if the plants do not show evidence of a nutrient deficiency. Compost is an organic material that naturally increases nutrient content in the soil and generates healthy plants. 

As time progresses, the natural compose starts to decompose to give plants a more efficient and long-lasting nutrient supply. Other organisms that get attracted to the nutrient-rich soil, such as earthworms and other needed microorganisms, help enrich the garden soil, making it an ideal environment for seed generation and fertilization.
